Normally the TCG industry doesn’t have its eyes on the Disney scene but that’s all about to change as Disney is set to make a huge announcement at this year’s D23 event in Anaheim! Yep, Disney is about to take on the big dogs in the trading card game market with the soon to be released DISNEY LORCANA!
Images of the cards were leaked out over the last 24-hours as Disney is expected to release more information this weekend at their annual D23 Expo at the Anaheim Convention Center which runs September 9th thru the 11th.
What Is Disney Lorcana?
Disney Lorcana is Disney’s very first venture into Trading Card Games, which are often referred to as a Collectible Card Games (CCG.) Although we don’t have much in the way of details yet, based on the images of the cards we’ve seen, Lorcana will most likely play very similar to Magic: The Gathering, Pokemon, MetaZoo and other TCG’s. Players build their decks from cards found in Booster Packs or pre-configured decks and play against each other in a battle to outlast their opponent.
Scheduled for official release in the Fall of 2023, Disney Lorcana: The First Chapter will certainly have a huge base of Disney fans waiting for something that has long been rumored to be in the works behind the scenes at the Disney company. But will the game have enough interest from Disney fans and will the TCG community embrace a game based on Disney characters? Only time will tell.
Here are some interesting things we found out about Disney Lorcana:
- Disney is betting big that German game manufacturer Ravensburger can do the job on Lorcana, even though this is Ravensburger’s first venture into the trading card game market. Not an easy task.
- Plans are for the set to hit shelves (globally) in the Fall of 2023 which will be followed by four new card sets released annually thereafter.
- Those attending the D23 Expo the weekend of 9/9/22 thru 9/11/22 will have the opportunity to purchase a seven card special edition foil set that is stamped with the D23 Expo and 1st Edition symbols. The cost of the set will be $49.95. Yep, Disney is making you pay for it. BOO!!
- No details yet about booster boxes, decks, packs, etc. My guess is we’ll find out more about those details early in 2023.
My guess is there are quite a few Disney fans out there that also dabble in TCG’s like Magic: The Gathering, Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh! and MetaZoo so LORCANA is probably something that will be welcomed by most collectors and players. Although not much in the way of details have been released, anything with Disney’s name on it has a great shot of doing well for sure.
Will Disney Lorcana Be A Good Investment?
But our focus here at MCI is about collecting and investing in TCG’s so the question remains, will Disney Lorcana be a good long term investment? Again, only time will tell and it’s too early to know if Disney will limit availability and print runs to ensure long term value.
As a long time Disney fan I can assure you of one thing. The Disney of the last couple of years is all about the bottom line. It’s about squeezing every last dollar from those attending theme parks and Disney related events so I’m sure they’ll do the same with Lorcana. We’ll have to keep a close eye on production numbers, products being released, card rarity and other things starting next year to see if this product will be worth investing in. For now it’s just too early to tell.
However, I will say this. I’m excited to see what Disney does with this game. I think Disney entering the TCG market will only draw more attention to other games and quite possibly drive more players to Magic: The Gathering and the other big TCG’s. And from a TCG investor’s point of view, that’s a really good thing.
